Vantage Points in Travel Photography

When I was a child watching Doctor Who on PBS, the Tom Baker incarnation of the famous time and space traveler said, "Travel broadens the mind." This rang out to me, screamed to me, as I was 14 years old and stuck in a small and insignificant southern town where nothing happened, with no way out in sight, no way to travel and experience new things. We were poor, my mother disabled, I never thought I'd ever get to see anything outside of my television. I felt trapped, and felt that way until I was 24 and managed to visit England the first time with all my saved pennies. 

Since then I've traveled a bit, not nearly as much as I wish, and it has broadened my mind in ways I never knew possible. Seeing places and learning the history, meeting people, eating foods, picking up a few words in other languages, all these experiences make a person who they are. And since photography is something I've also had a passion for since my teenage years, I love putting them together--travel and photography. 

Recording my experiences in travel, showing the viewer my vantage points, I only hope the viewer can find it as interesting as I did when I was motivated to click the shutter. That's the goal, can I make the viewer as interested as I was when I decided to shoot?

Anastasia Lang's Short Biography

I grew up in east Tennessee, where I studied fine art and graphic design at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, then went on to work in television news and video post-production as a graphic artist. 

In my teen years I picked up photography, trying to make my instamatic and Polaroid cameras do unnatural things to produce the kinds of images I had in my head. I got my first real SLR for my 16th birthday, and I've been shooting what moves me ever since.

I have lived on a 90-year old sailing barge in London, owned a ghost tour company in New Orleans, started a scooter club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and currently reside in San Diego, CA with my husband, a Navy officer, and our three dogs, Muppet, Dougal, and Guinevere. I am a freelance graphic artist and photographer.
